State of the art

The latest, newest, most advanced state of anything is first attested from 1910 and was first used in the context of engineering. The OED maintains that the use of the word state in this phrase is synonymous with ‘status’ implying that the original expression may have been ‘status of the art’, but no further proof of this is advanced by the OED.
