Spoke in the wheel

To put a spoke in someone’s wheel is to hinder or thwart someone’s plans or progress and this figurative use of the expression dates from c. 1854. Before this, for hundreds of years, a spoke was the wooden bar that was used in solid wooden wheels as a braking device. The spoke or bar was placed into holes in the wheels to slow the progress of horse-drawn vehicles.
