Spin doctor

This expression for a professional publicist, usually employed by senior politicians, is from America c. 1984 when it appeared in a New York Times article in October of that year. The spin part is from the allusion to spinning a yarn or telling a tale, or perhaps from spinning a web of intrigue. The doctor part simply implies expert.
