Song and dance

Song and dance acts were popular music hall and vaudeville acts during the 19th century. The expression became figurative in the sense of unnecessary and pointless pursuits, when making a song and dance about something was, and still is, making a big fuss about something trivial. This figurative sense dates from the latter half of the 19th century. See also For a song.
