Snuff it

British informal expression that means to die. It dates from the mid-19th century from the allusion to snuffing out or extinguishing a candle. There is no etymological connection to snuff, the powdered tobacco preparation that is inhaled through the nostrils in order to clear the nasal passages, first attested from 1688, and gets its name from snuffle i.e. to sniff up through the nose, which dates from the mid-16th century.
