Silver fox / vixen

Origin of: Silver fox / vixen

Silver fox / vixen

A silver fox is a metaphor for an attractive, older man with grey or white hair. The female equivalent is, of course, 'silver vixen', and there has been a first citation for this, in 2015, when the actress Helen Mirren was described in print as a 'silver vixen', according to Merriam-Webster. The expression 'silver fox' is American and dates from the 1920s, again, according to Merriam-Webster. During the 1920s, major league baseball pitcher, Jess Petty, was nicknamed “The Silver Fox,” both for his greying hair, and for his fox-like pitching skills. His nickname was so well-documented in newspaper accounts of his games that the expression caught on and has the meaning it enjoys today.
