Shut-eye
American colloquialism for sleep, dates from the late 19th century. Some sources attribute the origin to Hans Christian Anderson who wrote a story, which when translated from the Danish was about 'Olaf the Eye-shutter', a benign creature who put children sleep. But again, this story only began to circulate in English during the late 19th century, by which time the American colloquialism 'shuteye' may well have already been in use.
