Shotgun wedding

A forced marriage usually involving an unplanned pregnancy and an unwilling or reluctant bridegroom, an Americanism that dates in this sense from the 1920s. It derives from the allusion that a reluctant bridegroom in this situation might be persuaded to marry by a shotgun-wielding prospective father-in-law.
