Shot

As in a discharge from a weapon dates from The Middle Ages and was only applied to sports from the early 19th century. Shot meaning a drink is first attested from the late 1600s but its more precise meaning of a small measure of hard liquor dates from the early 20th century. Shot as in an attempt at something or other dates from the mid- 1700s. Shot meaning ruined, worn out or sometimes drunk dates from the mid-19th century.
