Short straw

The full expression is to draw the short straw which dates from the 19th century. Drawing straws was a common form of deciding who in a group would be chosen for doing something, usually unpleasant. Straws of varying lengths were held in the hand with only the tips showing. The person drawing the shortest straw is the loser.
