Short shrift

To be given short shrift is to get brief and unsympathetic treatment and this meaning and usage dates from the early 19th century. Shrift derives from the word shrive which means to absolve in confession. Thus, the original short shrift was a speedy confession and absolution, given to criminals during The Middle Ages, usually before they were executed.
