Shoot one’s bolt

Squander or waste one’s chances of achieving or winning; an old proverb first recorded in John Heywood Proverbs (1546) derives from an over-hasty or wasted bolt shot from a crossbow. The original proverb is “A fool’s bolt is soon shot.” As slang for ejaculate, it dates from the 19th century.
