Sherbet

Origin of: Sherbet

Sherbet

Originally, sherbet was a cooling drink made from fruit juice and water and dates from the early 1600s. The word comes from Turkish or Arabic roots where serbet or sharba means simply a drink. More latterly, from the late 19th century, it is Australian slang for an alcoholic drink, especially beer. Since the early 20th century, especially in South Africa, it is also used as a mild expletive or euphemism for shit.
