Shemozzle

This is an expression meaning a state of chaos and utter confusion. It is thought to have originated in London’s East End in the late 19th century. It looks and sounds like a Yiddish word and some authorities on the German/Hebrew dialect maintain it is a corruption of the Yiddish schlim mazel, which means bad luck. Others deny its Yiddish roots, so the issue remains unresolved.
