Shape up or ship out

This expression is first attested from the mid-1950s and is originally from the US military, an order directed at troublesome personnel to conform, do the right thing or get shipped out immediately on active duty. In business and social contexts, the meaning changes to meet the required standards or find another job or leave the scene.
