Set in stone

An ancient metaphor for something that is permanent and cannot be changed. It is centuries old and exists in many different languages and cultures. It is thought to derive its meaning from the Ten Commandments, which were engraved on stone tablets and given to Moses by God, as recorded in the Bible Exodus 31:18.
