Scholar and a gentleman

Not many people realise they are quoting the Scottish poet Robert Burns when they use this expression, but the original phrase was the other way round, gentleman and scholar. It is from the Robert Burns poem The Twa Dogs (1786), “His locked, lettered, braw brass collar showed him the gentleman and scholar.”
