Same old, same old

Origin of: Same old, same old

Same old, same old

Same old, same old' is an informal way of expressing that one's life and circumstances in general have not changed, and are repeatedly routine and ordinary. It is, of course, a truncation of the phrase 'same old story', by which people mean there is nothing new to report in their lives. Its origin is obscure but there are reports that it was first heard in Black American street talk in the late 1950s. It is first attested from the 1960s and came into general usage by the 1970s.
