Salary

This 17th century word meaning remuneration for services rendered has its origin from Roman times and derives from the Latin salarium, which in turn derives from the Latin sal meaning salt. Salarium was money paid to Roman soldiers to buy salt. Salt was a very valuable commodity in ancient times and if a Roman soldier was worth his salt it meant he was worth every penny he was paid.
