Rule of thumb

Origin of: Rule of thumb

Rule of thumb

Means a rough and ready estimation, measurement or way of working and dates from the 17th century. Therefore, it has nothing whatsoever to do with any form of medieval castigation or wife beating, as some folk etymologists would have us believe. The thumb, especially the top joint, has always been a rough and ready way of measuring things. It is roughly equivalent to one inch and this is why rule of thumb is always an approximation.
