Rock and roll (Rock ‘n’ roll)

This was originally an African-American expression often used in music lyrics, especially blues, from about 1934 onwards. In this context, it meant sexual intercourse. More famously, from 1954, it was used to describe the new genre of beat music from America that became a worldwide phenomenon. The abbreviation rock as in rock music is first cited from 1957.
