Ripsnorter

Origin of: Ripsnorter

Ripsnorter

Originally, the North American version of snorter, meaning something extraordinary, striking or spectacular. But why 'rip'? 'Rip' was added to snorter c. 1840 in North America for added emphasis meaning more vigorous, more striking, more remarkable than a mere 'snorter.' See also Ripper/ripping.
