Ring the changes

This expression now means to employ alternative methods and originates from the ancient custom of bell ringing when different peals of the bells indicated changes in message and meaning. Its figurative meaning is first recorded in print in 1614 when Thomas Adams wrote, “Some ring the changes of opinion.” See also Rings a bell.
