Rich as Croesus

Croesus c. 550 BC was the fabulously wealthy King of Lydia, an ancient kingdom once situated in what is modern Western Turkey. He is mentioned in the histories of Herodotus (c.485-c.425 BC). The expression existed in both Greek and Latin long before its emergence in English during the 14th century.
