Red-letter day

A red-letter day is a special day to mark a holiday or a celebration and the expression has been used in this way since the 18th century. The origin derives from Roman times when important days in the Roman calendar were marked in red. The practice continued through medieval times when scribes would mark Sundays and holy days on calendars in red letters.
