Read between the lines

Means to discern a meaning that is not obvious or explicit, dates from the early 19th century and derives from a simple form of cryptography where the message was secreted between lines of text by means of invisible ink that would become visible when warmed over a candle. By the late 19th century, the expression was being used figuratively in the way it is used today.
