As an adjective denoting vigorous, excessive plant growth it is first recorded from the 13th century. By the 16th century, the meaning evolved to foul or evil-smelling as in a rank smell and, around the same time, also came to mean utter or absolute as in expressions like ‘a rank outsider’.
