Radar

Electronic system for locating objects, especially aircraft, by means of radio waves. The acronym radar was coined by the US Navy in 1940 from radio detection and ranging or radio direction and ranging. It won out over the British ‘radiolocation’. Figurative usage, ‘to be on someone’s radar’ meaning to be in someone’s knowledge or interest dates from the 1950s. See also Under the radar.
