Queer Street

This is early 19th century British slang for financial difficulties and is still in common use on both sides of the Atlantic. Queer Street was an imaginary street where people in trouble were supposed to live. Queer is used here in the sense of its 15th century meaning of rum or irregular and has nothing to do with homosexuality.
