Put up or shut up

Put up or shut up is a forceful way of saying provide some fresh evidence or facts or withdraw from the debate. The expression is American in origin from the latter half of the 19th century and is thought to derive from either poker, where a player must put up a bet or fold, or boxing, where a boxer one must put up his fists or walk away.
