Put through the wringer

To put someone through the wringer is to give them a hard time, dates from the early 20th century and derives from the old-fashioned habit of putting laundry through the wringer, which was a pair of rollers operated manually by a handle. As washed laundry passed through the rollers, excess moisture was squeezed out.
