Punch one’s way out of a paper bag

An American expression that is usually used in the negative form. For example, a person might say of another, “When up against it, he couldn’t punch his way out of a paper bag”. This could, of course, be describing an inept, weak boxer but, from about 1910 onwards, it could also be used figuratively to describe a weak, inept performance of any kind.
