Pour oil on troubled waters

These days, this old proverb is seen as more of an environmental disaster but the calming effect of oil on water was known to both the Ancient Greeks and Romans and is mentioned in the works of both Pliny the Elder and Plutarch. As an English proverb meaning to calm a problematical situation, it dates from medieval times.
