Pound seats

To be in the pound seats is to be in a very good position with everything going well. It appears to be a South African expression, and derives from the days when seats in theatres or sports stadia that cost a South African pound were the best seats in the house. The South African currency, which used to be in pounds, shillings and pence, was decimalised in 1961 when the Rand was introduced, so the expression must have originated from before that time. Therefore, the date of origin is probably mid-20th century, but that is only a guess. See also Box seats.
