Pork barrel

This is an American expression that describes government or state financial resources. The expression pork barrel politics is used when politicians promise benefits from state resources in return for votes. Its usage in this sense dates from the early 20th century but its origin dates from the early 19th century country practice when general stores kept a barrel of salt pork from which good customers could help themselves.
