Poppycock

This fine old English word for rubbish or nonsense is neither very old nor English. In fact, users of the word will be a little disturbed to learn of its origins. It comes from the Dutch poppe kak meaning doll shit, from pop meaning doll (from which we get the word poppet) and kak meaning excrement. Dutch settlers brought the phrase poppe kak or doll shit to America in the 1600s and the Americans kindly re-exported the anglicised version poppycock back to Britain in the mid-19th century, mercifully now devoid of all scatological connotations.
