Pony

Origin of: Pony

Pony

British slang for £25 (25 pounds sterling) and is first attested from the late 18th century. The origin is unknown, despite many different theories. Some sources state that 25 pounds used to be the cost of hiring horses or ponies for special occasions, others maintain that a pony or horse used to be depicted on Indian coinage and returning British army soldiers brought the word the word back from India.
