British informal word for a pimp or an effeminate, dressy man dates from the late 19th century and the origin remains unknown. Some sources maintain it derives from rhyming slang, Charlie Ronce/ponce, but this or the existence of anyone named Charlie Ronce has not been confirmed. See also Charlie/Charlies.
