Pipe dream

A pipe dream is an unattainable hope or fantasy and is first cited in America from the late 19th century. The allusion is to the delusions or euphoria induced by smoking an opium pipe. The smoking of opium pipes was quite well known in Britain from the 18th century, so it is curious that this expression should originate, as it does, from America about one hundred years later.
