Pie in the sky

An empty wish or promise, an unrealistic objective, an American expression dates from the early 20th century from the union song The Preacher and the Slave c.1910 attributed to American labour leader Joe Hill, “Work and pray, live on hay. You’ll get pie in the sky when you die.” It was later a popular First World War song with American troops in France.
