Penny wise, pound foolish

Origin of: Penny wise, pound foolish

Penny wise, pound foolish

This aphorism means that concern over small things can lead to missing greater opportunities or pre-occupation with trivial amounts of money can result in missing opportunities for greater gains. It dates from the early 1600s. The phrase ‘penny wisdom’ also derives from this notion and the OED dates this from about the same time although, as a phrase, ‘penny wisdom’ is not often encountered these days.
