Peanuts

A trivial amount of money is American from the 1930s. The peanut or ground nut is native to South America but soon made its way to North America where it was and still is grown in abundance. During the 19th century it became one of the cheapest snack foods in America, hence its association with a trivial amount of money. See also Peanut gallery.
