Pandemonium

Origin of: Pandemonium

Pandemonium

Means uproar, complete confusion, but only acquired this meaning during the 18th century. The word itself was coined by John Milton in Paradise Lost in 1667, Book X, line 424, “Pandemonium, city and proud seat of Lucifer.” Milton coined Pandemonium as a proper name for Lucifer’s city from pan + demonium signifying that it was the home of all devils. The word had passed into the language with its current meaning by the end of the 18th century.
