Out of the equation

An equation in its mathematical sense, where two sets of values are equal, dates from the 1500s. Equation in its looser sense of a situation or set of circumstances having a number of elements that need to be taken into consideration dates from the late 1600s. Hence, to remove or take something out of the equation or out of a set of circumstances dates from around the same time i.e. the late 17th century.
