On the button

Origin of: On the button

On the button

Perfectly placed or perfectly correct, in the correct spot, an American expression that dates from the 1930s. It does not derive from button as in clothing or from a mechanical button that one pushes, it in fact derives from earlier pugilistic slang from the early 20th century, where button was slang for the chin or the point of the chin - the perfect spot to strike an opponent.
