On the blink

Usually used to describe a machine or appliance that is not working properly or perhaps not working at all, dates from the late 19th century when primitive, electrically powered machinery invariably had electric lights indicating whether the machine was on or off. When such lights started to blink or switch on and off it would mean the machine or appliance was faulty.
