Nod is as good as a wink
<p>Indicates there is no need to say anymore because no further elaboration or explanation is required. The expression dates from the 1600s but the original form was the longer expression, ‘A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse.’ It also sometimes appears as, ‘A nod is as good as a wink to a blind man.’ These are early examples of Wellerisms, although they would not have been known by that name in the 1600s. A nod is as good as a wink sometimes takes on a sexual or illegal innuendo depending on the context. Sometimes it appears as 'a nudge is as good as wink' but this is a mistake because of confusion with <strong>Wink, wink, nudge, nudge</strong>, to which please refer.</p>
