Nightmare

This word for a bad dream or a situation that resembles a bad dream dates from the 16th century and has nothing to do with female horses. Its literal meaning is night demon and derives from the archaic English word mare from the Old English maere, which dates from the late 14th/early 15th century and refers to an incubus, demon or spectre that in medieval times supposedly afflicted people while they slept.
