Never foul one's own nest

Origin of: Never foul one's own nest

Never foul one's own nest

This is a very old saying that urges one to never harm or endanger one's own interests, from the obvious analogy of a bird besmirching its own nest, and dates from the 13th century. It has always been a more tasteful, erudite version of the more modern, vulgar saying 'never shit on one's own doorstep', which dates from the late 19th century.
