Nest egg

Origin of: Nest egg

Nest egg

Nest egg as in savings or investments set aside for later use derives from the notion of placing a false egg in a chicken’s nest to induce and encourage the chicken to lay its own eggs. This practice dates from at least the 14th century but the connection to savings and investments is not altogether clear, unless the false or nest egg can be said to produce a many more real eggs. Nest egg meaning savings dates from the late 17th century.
